Modern Breweries Are Made for Events Like the World Cup
A brewer sips Barebottle's "Hoppin' Around The World" Hazy IPA. The beer was brewed specially for World Cup 2026 utilizing hops from seven different participating nations.

Every four years, something unusual happens.

Millions of people across the planet who normally consume entertainment alone suddenly seek out other human beings.

They wake up early, rearrange their schedules, and make plans with friends they haven't seen in months. They leave their couches to gather in public squares, pubs, bars, and increasingly, breweries—watching the world's game alongside friends and strangers alike.

For a few weeks, those strangers become teammates, neighbors become rivals, and entire communities find themselves united by the simple act of watching the same thing at the same time.

The World Cup reminds us that the biggest and best things get even better when they are shared.

We've all heard about the decline of gathering places. Streaming will replace movie theaters. Online shopping will replace malls. Swiping replaced singles bars, and social media was supposed to replace community.

Yet every time a truly meaningful milestone or cultural moment arrives, people still want to be around other people.

That's one reason breweries are becoming a larger part of the Bay Area community life.

Yes, breweries make beer. But increasingly, that's not our primary function.

People come to celebrate birthdays. They meet friends after work. They bring their kids and dogs. They attend fundraisers, trivia nights, markets, paint-and-sips, pitch-a-friends, speed-dating, comedy shows, wrestling matches, and watch parties.

In a culture where so many interactions have moved to digital spaces, breweries remain one of the few places where people can simply exist together—come as they are, stay as long as they'd like, and leave when they're ready.

The World Cup is a perfect example.

Old Caz Brewing in Rohnert Park just announced their slate of World Cup watch parties. Chances are your local brewery did too.

You can watch a match at home (or in secret from your desk at work). You can follow the score on your phone. You can scroll through highlights later.

What you can't recreate is the moment an entire room erupts after a dramatic goal. You can't replicate the nervous energy before a penalty kick, the collective groan after a missed chance, or the spontaneous conversations that happen between people who had never met before kickoff.

Those moments aren't really about sports. They're about belonging.

For all the discussion about changing drinking habits and shifting consumer preferences, the breweries that continue to thrive understand this. They aren't merely selling beer. They're creating social space.

So if you're looking for a place to catch a World Cup match this summer, consider visiting a local brewery. You can always follow our Instagram stories to find breweries that will be opening early or hosting special watch-party events. Or just call your favorite local spot or that brewery you've been waiting for an excuse to visit and ask what they are planning.

Bring a friend. Introduce yourself to a stranger. Stay for another conversation after the final whistle.

The beer will probably be excellent. In fact, several of our member breweries are even creating special recipes to celebrate the tournament.

As we covered a couple of weeks ago Headlands Brewing worked with breweries from both Mexico and Canada to create "Common Ground" in honor of each nations' World Cup venues

Years from now, however, you probably won't remember what was in your glass.

You'll remember where you were when everyone in the room jumped to their feet at the same time.
