There is a familiar, tired story being told about craft beer right now: breweries are closing, consumer interest is declining, and the industry's best days are behind it.

Like most simple narratives, this story is not entirely wrong, but it is woefully incomplete.

The challenges facing craft beer are real, especially in notoriously high-operating-cost markets like San Francisco. The economics of distributing beer at scale have become increasingly difficult. Consolidation among wholesalers, shifting consumer preferences, and rising costs are forcing breweries to rethink how they grow. But while some parts of the industry are contracting, others are adapting to cater to drinkers who increasingly prioritize local beer consumed fresh from the source.

The data backs up this shift. A recent Brewers Association report found that while the overall craft beer consumption is down, just under 40% of the country's 9,500 breweries reported production growth in 2025. The breweries that performed best were those selling at least 25% of the beer they produced directly to customers and pairing that beer with "a significant food program."

That distinction matters. The future of craft beer is not necessarily about making more beer and putting it in more places. Increasingly, it is about creating the places where your customers want to spend time.

A decade ago, breweries fought for shelf space, in an attempt to be as convenient to the consumer's routine as possible. Today, we are increasingly competing to become the destinations within destinations, the places people seek out when they arrive somewhere new.

Recently, two Bay Area Brewers Guild members announced ambitious new projects in San Francisco locales that already have their own identity and draw. These openings reflect a vision of the craft beer future built around destination experiences, delicious food, hospitality, and providing people a place to gather.

San Francisco Brewing Company Expands to Mission Bay

Two weeks ago yesterday, San Francisco Brewing Company announced it would be opening a major new brewery and restaurant in Mission Bay, transforming the former Seven Stills facility into a large-scale destination near Oracle Park.

The new location represents a significant investment in a growing neighborhood, adding a production brewery, restaurant, and event space to the company's existing brewpub on Ghirardelli Square.

Fieldwork Brewing Heads to the Presidio

Fieldwork Brewing Company made its own news last week, announcing plans to bring its hospitality-driven taproom model to the former Presidio Social Club space.

When it opens, the Presidio will become Fieldwork's 11th location overall and its third in San Francisco, joining existing outposts at China Basin and Mission Rock.

"We are very bullish on San Francisco overall," Fieldwork co-founder and CEO Barry Braden told the Chronicle last week.

The move is another example of Fieldwork's growth strategy: creating neighborhood-focused, family-friendly gathering places where communities come together over beer, shareable appetizers, and pizza.

A City of Brewery Destinations

With Fieldwork soon to arrive in the Presidio, Bay Area Brewers Guild member breweries will soon have a presence at nearly every major San Francisco destination.

As mentioned, visitors exploring Ghirardelli Square can find San Francisco Brewing Company. Those visiting Pier 39 can enjoy Humble Sea’s harbor-side tasting room. Fort Point has the Ferry Building covered. Fieldwork's China Basin location is already just steps from Oracle Park, and San Francisco Brewing Company's Mission Bay project will soon join them nearby.

Heading to a Warriors or Valkyries game? You'll find Harmonic Brewing's Thrive City taproom there waiting for you. Exploring the western edge of the city? Depending on which side of Golden Gate Park you visit, you'll be steps away from either Beach Chalet Brewery & Restaurant or Fifty Vara. Even at summer concerts in Stern Grove, our member breweries are part of the experience, with both Drake's Brewing and Fort Point supporting the series as sponsors.

Taken together, these examples tell a decidedly different story about the future of small breweries in San Francisco than one might glean from the headlines.

The city’s next chapter will not be written solely by barrel counts or distribution maps. It will be written by breweries that understand beer's historic role in giving people a reason to gather together: to explore new neighborhoods, discover new places, and connect more deeply with one another.

San Francisco Brewing Company, Fieldwork, and the other 40% of American breweries that are growing right now are responding to challenges small breweries face by creating experiences that cannot be sufficiently replicated in a grocery aisle, on a can label, or by an algorithm.

For an industry that has spent a lot of time discussing contraction, it is refreshing to spend a week focused on what is being built.
